Read & Pray for Sunday We Discuss

Our scriptures for Sunday come from Deuteronomy and from the gospel of Mark. Tim will give a brief message followed by a discussion, or talk-back as some like to call it. Please read and pray on Deuteronomy 10:12-22, 24:17-18 and Mark 12: 28-31 between now and Sunday. You can read them from the Common English Bible here or, if you prefer, read them in your favorite translation. Perhaps as you read them you might pray about God’s expectations of us in relationship to immigrants.

We will be looking at Deuteronomy 11:18-21, 26-18 this week. Coming from the elder testament, it was one among those texts that Jesus called scripture. Jesus even quoted parts of Deuteronomy in the gospels. Writing 600 years before the birth of Jesus, many “Deuteronomists”  believed that those who found favor with God were blessed by good fortune and that those whose lot in life was harsh, were being punished by God. Gradually, this view of God changed. Jesus quotes Deuteronomy, part of his Bible, in the gospels because of their value in teaching us how to live a life faithful to God. He does so despite his variance with their idea of a god who actively curses people.

Please read this week’s passage in your favorite Bible or you can read it below from the Common English Bible.
18You shall put these words of mine in your heart and soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and fix them as an emblem on your forehead. 19Teach them to your children, talking about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. 20Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, 21so that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the LORD swore to your ancestors to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth…. 26See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse: 27the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I am commanding you today; 28and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn from the way that I am commanding you today, to follow other gods that you have not known.
